Top 8 Things To do When Hiring a New Employee

Hiring new employees is one of the hardest things for businesses to get right. Even with a detailed and extensive interviewing process, you can’t be sure that you have chosen the right candidate. However, you can make sure you give them everything they need to perform. Here are the top eight things to do when hiring a new employee.

    1. Get the employee set up with the company systems

One of the first (and most important) tasks is to get the new employee set up on company systems. This includes everything from the payroll and intranet to the specific software they’ll need to do their job. Getting this done before the employee arrives will allow them to get straight on with their new role.

    2. Complete new hire paperwork

There’s often a bunch of paperwork that comes with hiring a new employee. This should be prioritized to make sure that there is no delay in getting them to work. If you can complete this on (or before) their first day, you should. It will make them feel welcomed and a part of the team.

    3. Get their desk and phone setup

When you walk into a new job, it’s a relief to find an area that is dedicated to you. That’s why you should get the new employee’s desk and phone set up straight away. This will give them a base to start getting to know their new role.

    4. Run a background check

If you haven’t already done a background check, now is a good time. Using a service like DataCheck, you can find out important information about their work history, criminal history, and more. Plus, you can personalize the background check to suit your company.

    5. Schedule an employee orientation

Employee orientations are super important to get right. However, many companies overlook them. The more detailed and hands-on you can make their training, the faster they will pick up the new role. High-quality employee orientation will fill your new hire with confidence that you are taking it seriously. Introduce them to members of the team and allow them to get to know the product or service.

    6. Schedule employee training

Once your new hire has received their employee orientation, you should schedule some more in-depth employee training. This should be specific to their role and give them a solid introduction to any products or services they will be working with. Some companies use outsource employee trainers, but it’s generally better to keep it in-house.

    7. Host a team welcome for the new hire

Your new employee is likely to feel nervous about meeting the team. Make it easier by hosting a team welcome for them. Brief your current employees on the new hire, giving them information about the job role and expectations. Also, make it clear that you want them to be welcomed to the team. All of this will speed up the onboarding process.

    8. Set employee goals

Most people work better if they know what is expected of them.

There’s nothing worse than joining a new company and not knowing your goals. That’s why you should make it a priority to discuss this with them. The more information you can provide, the better they will perform.
