With the summer travel season in full swing, countless travelers are preparing to embark on trips abroad. In addition to providing you with an abundance of new and unique experiences, traveling to other countries can broaden your perspective on a wide range of issues. This being the digital age, you’d be hard-pressed to find a traveler who’s willing to leave home without their trusty smart phone. Since most of us practically live on our phones, the prospect of traveling without them is simply unthinkable. However, anyone who intends to bring their phone on their next travel excursion would be wise to secure the device. In the quest to keep your phone safe when traveling abroad, the following tips are sure to come in handy.

Make Sure Your Apps and Operating System Are Up to Date

Before setting off on your journey, take care to update your phone’s operating system and all the apps you regularly use. Updates are often created in response to new and emerging security threats, and installing them as they become available is a great way to get a leg up on cybercriminals. Conversely, installing updates sporadically or avoiding them altogether can have a host of undesirable consequences, most notably hacking and data theft.

For enhanced protection, consider investing in top-tier security software, antivirus programs and threat intelligence gateways. When shopping around for the right cyber security aids, make a point of perusing reviews from professional publications and individual consumers. This will help match you with software that perfectly meets your unique security needs. As is the case with your apps and O.S., these programs will need to be kept up to date for maximum effectiveness.

Make the Phone Inaccessible to Thieves

Although many people carry their phones in their back pockets, this is not recommended when you’re outside of familiar surroundings. For starters, if your phone falls out of your back pocket, you’re unlikely to notice its absence in a timely manner. Secondly, thieves love removing items from back pockets, as they can often do so without drawing attention to themselves. With this in mind, you’ll need to carry your phone in a way that makes it inaccessible to those who would steal it. Placing your phone in your front pocket or clipping it to your belt ensure that you’ll be able to keep an eye on the device as you make your way through exciting new locales. Even when you’re not on the move, your phone should always be within easy reach and never be left unattended.

    Remove Important Data

There’s always a possibility that your phone will be lost or stolen during your trip. While taking the proper precautions can dramatically diminish the chances of this happening, they can’t reduce the likelihood to zero. As such, it’s recommended that you remove as much important data as possible from the phone in advance of your departure. So if your phone currently houses financial documents, photos or contact info that you don’t want falling into the wrong hands, take care to transfer these files to another device before heading out.

    Enable Password Protection

While entering a password every time you wish to use your phone may be a bit cumbersome, password protection can prove invaluable in preventing criminals from accessing your data. In addition to enabling password protection, create a password that’s impossible to guess by avoiding common expressions and number combinations. If you absolutely refuse to use password protection, considering enabling your phone’s fingerprint scanner – provided, of course, your model has this feature.

International travel can do wonders for the mind and body. Bidding a temporary farewell to you usual surroundings and charting a course for parts unknown is enjoyable, liberating and likely to stay with you for the rest of your life. For many of us, the idea of embarking on such a trip without our phones seems too ridiculous to entertain. While there’s nothing inherently wrong with bringing your trusty smart phone on a trip abroad, there are numerous precautions you’ll need to take in order to keep the device (and the personal information contained therein) out of harm’s way. If you’ll soon be setting off on an international travel excursion, remember to put the previously discussed pointers to good use.
